The AAGPBL All-American Girl Professional Baseball League Tribute Continues
I was asked if I would like to come to Tropicana Field to see the installation of my Penny Marshall sculpture. I was delighted. Today, while Carlos Pena was being honored, I heard him say how his dad celebrated his foul balls. I was sitting next to Sister Toni, one of the original All American Girls players. She chimed in softly, “Well, of course he did; you made contact.” The entire thing resonated with me. The idea of showing up, the idea of celebrating the effort, and the idea of making contact even if the ball does not go where you wish it would go. Celebrate that you made contact. Or if you did not make contact, celebrate that your swing was good. Find some success in whatever you do. There is a metaphor for life here, guys. You don't always have to hit a home run.
