Back to Business!

My hand.

A short hiatus this summer for several things

Last month I took the plunge and had surgery on my right hand. Over the years traditional sculpting had taken a toll on my thumb. ( I used to boast that I had the strongest thumb muscles of anyone I know.)  The surgery was done at the Brown Hand center by a wonderful doctor.  I’m thrilled that they have given me my career back.  My hand was pretty much useless for the couple of weeks that it healed, and there is still swelling, but I am working much better than I did before surgery and will be 100+ percent in no time at all. So I am back in the studio getting clay under my nails.

Then it was off to Vermont for a graduate school residency. I was also presenting a lecture on writing.

I’m back in the studio working and looking forward to also getting back to zbrush.

Away At College

Sorry for the lack of posts.  I have been traveling and then in residency for the last two weeks.  For those who may not know I am in a graduate program at Goddard College in Vermont.   I have another blog where I document my perpetual learner experience.  It can be found at http://www.perpetuallearner.blogspot.com be back into the studio and office in the next day and will be getting back to work. Can’t wait to create artwork for this semester.

A Writer’s Prayer

The Writer’s Prayer
By Sandy Tritt

Open my mind, Lord. Grant me the talent to write with clarity and style, so my words go down rich and smooth, like fine wine, and leave my reader thirsty for more.

Open my heart, Lord. Grant me the sensitivity to understand my characterstheir hopes, their wants, their dreamsand help me to confer that empathy to my reader.

Open my soul, Lord, so I may be a channel to wisdom and creativity from beyond my Self. Stoke my imagination with vivid imagery and vibrant perception.

But most of all, Lord, help me to know the Truth, so my fiction is more honest than actuality and reaches the depths of my reader’s soul.

Wrap these gifts with opportunity, perseverance, and the strength to resist those who insist it can’t be done.

Amen. ~ Sandy Tritt

New Posts To Come!

Sorry for the lull in posting.  I took the plunge to have that needed hand surgery. Will be good as new very soon.  Looking forward to sculpting and writing again without pain.

Keep Creating And Running Into Brick Walls!

This is the cool tutorial that I found on the pixologic website. I had envisioned myself doing the entire building, but alas some parts of the tutorial are missing. I’m documenting my progress on my other webiste at http://www.digitalsculpting.net/showthread.php?101-Progjection-Master-in-zbrush-Tutorial-by-Sabstien-Legrain.
Column created in zbrush using projection master

I’m working in zbrush and trying to learn how to translate what I know from Mudbox and traditional art into Zbrush. Now, many people say that Zbrush is very hard to use. I would probably agree, but it is also because it does so much. I can see these two programs, added to the technology of 3d printing and milling that I have been studying and wrote about in the mudbox book, as giving me so many more tools in my traditional process. For example, I now can create portraits in stone, and do architectural elements quite easily.  It is thrilling.  I have been working on a tutorial to create this fancy looking building. The tutorial can be found on the pixologic website. But I have added a thread with all of the videos and the complications and problems that I find with the process  on our Digital Sculpting.net website. I’ll keep the thread  going as I progress with this tutorial.  I’m including a picture of my column.

A little Something I’m Working On

WORK IN PROGRESS – a cameo

It seems like I’m working on a lot of little somethings. But what happens is I get going and then get stuck and have a question so I have to stop on it until I figure out the answer. This is a bas relief. My thought is that it could be made into a cameo.

Here she is complete. I had so much fun with this.

Another Armature- A Scary Digital Tree- Work In Progress

I have been trying to get a handle on zbrush.  This is a zsphere of a tree.  A zsphere is like the armature that the clay will rest on.  The scary tree is a portion of a bigger project for an illustration.  Much more to do. Long way to go. But I thought I would share it.

A New Piece Of Art- This Time Digital Art

A Zbrush fish started with zsketch
Cool bronze texture

I have been working very intensively with Zbrush since finishing up the Mudbox book. (Sculpting in the computer is much easier on my hands, and a welcome change until my hand surgery. ) I have wanted to really get into it. So here is my art nouveau fish. I have tried him in several different materials. Still have not painted him. But what fun it will be to play with him some more.

This is probably the closest to the real color.
Now to try to paint him or put him in a scene.
