3DCAMP- Houston-Get Ready

I did not speak at the 2009 3d camp, instead I presented in the common area. Here I am talking about the Next Engine Digital Scanner

I have been working with a few very interesting people on reviving the 3DCAMP-Houston that took place in 2009. It is exciting to be on this committee and to see something grow and come to fruition.

3D CAMP is a day long seminar that will take place September 29th, 2012 in Houston, Texas.

Many different speakers will be present as well as vendors and others. Now we are not just talking gaming and 3D as it pertains to film. Now 3d is reaching wider than that, and personally, I’m very excited to see a fine art component added to this years 3D CAMP

What else is new about this 3D CAMP? Well this time it is going to be taking place in The Arts District of Houston. This is a series of warehouses just south of I-10 off of Sawyer. If you know of artist David Adickess it is where his old studio used to be, and yes, his large heads of presidents will be there for viewing. Transportation will be provided between speaker venues. One venue will have an exhibition hall where vendors and artists can work and show their process and wares. In this same exhibition hall will be a blow out art show featuring many different aspects of 3D art. The art show will be the night before the event.  Think show, party, excitement!

I will be speaking and here is a description of my two topics.

3d Art – Fabric to Frankenstein

3d technology, science and art are combined to create some incredible and sometimes bazaar artwork. Sculptor, Bridgette Mongeon shares the work of different artists, and the vendors and universities who are making some interesting discoveries. Many artists are embracing the new technology, having fun and creating some incredible and sometimes gruesome artwork.

Bridging the gab between the traditional and digital sculpture studio

Sculptor Bridgette Mongeon shares her work flow and resources of incorporating both digital and traditional technology in what is referred to as tra-digi art that she creates in her Houston, Texas studio. The new technology expands the creative process and expedites her work flow.

A Great Committee!

There are some really prime people on the committee. I don’t have everyone’s bios but besides myself there is executive director of SpaceTaker– Jenni Rebecca stephenson. What is spacetaker? Here is what is on their mission statement “Spacetaker is a 501(c)3 professional organization and Artist Resource Center located in Houston’s First Ward whose mission is to provide artists and non-profits access to economic development, continuing education, and networking opportunities to support their professional growth.”

Lori Betz from Betz Art Gallery and Betz Art Foundry Betz Gallery is in charge of the art show and the call for artists.

David Morris is the founder of 3D CAMP- I can’t believe he did this on his own in 2009.

There are of course some others listed on the planning committee but I have not met them face to face yet.

No Comments Please, Well Yes, But No

I have had several people come to my studio for various reasons and without being asked, have offered their suggestions on Evelyn.  I realize that though I am keeping this blog and have kept others on my process it is really a solitary job. The comments I receive from those who see it on facebook are things like, it is coming along or WOW or things like that.  But having comments on the piece in my studio or about the structure of a piece, before I am really ready to show it is a bit frustrating.  It is kind of like cleaning your closet and taking everything out and organizing it and having someone walk into your room and say, “Wow, this is a disaster.”

I think  that the process of creating an entire human form is huge.  I jump around from head to feet, to in between, back to feet and legs and, step back and see so many things, and make a list and then try to focus and them put things together and look and make more lists. My clients may be watching from afar, but it is in no way shape or form ready to review.   I will appreciate the comment from those that I trust, when I’m ready, but until then… My closet is a disaster, but I’m getting there.

I watch them on my iphone, while in my pj’s, in bed before I go to sleep. How did they know?  Thanks so much Pixologic.  Check out the tutorials. You will be blown away. See you in Pixologic Homeroom.

Zbrush continues to amaze me. I so want to do my own tutorials on zbrush.

Laying Down On The Job

So, you could say I have spent the last two days on the floor of the studio.  How else are you going to sculpt ankles and legs? Pillows are thrown about as I try to crawl around and sculpt, then stand up and go to the other side of the room to look, and then back down on the ground.

A Free 3D Symposium For Artists In Houston, Texas

Big things are happening in Houston, Texas.  After creating numerous tutorials and working on several books for artists who want to be inspired by using both traditional and digital processes in their studio, we are in the planning stages for a free 3d symposium in Houston, Texas.  I’m having a meeting this week to see if we are going to join forces with 3D camp Houston. If you want to know more, to  be on a mailing list or interested in participation as a speaker or sponsor, please post to this blog and I’ll be sure to let you know.

FYI, please pass the word, if we can have enough participation we are also interested in hosting a combined art show featuring 3d work.

Finished 3D Presentation For Possible New Project

I mentioned in a previous post that I was looking for just the right 3d outfit to use in a presentation that was similar to the ones I had in a photograph. Well, I must say that the people on the forum of daz 3d rock. They answered my questions within an hour and pointed me in the right direction.

To learn more about this project follow along on the project blog at United In Space.

Looking For A 3D Jump Suite-Sculpture Presentations

Hard to find the correct 3d model for this.

Working on a new project presentation and could really use a jump suite that looks similar to this or can be modified in a sculpting program to look like this. Not a real one, a 3d model that I can use with a daz or poser model

If you are interested in seeing how I use these 3d models, it is a bit different from most.  I use them in presentations for life-size bronze sculpture, and sometimes in my process. Check out this You tube video or some of the other documentation of my projects on this blog by searching for daz or poser or check out one of my project blogs such as the Evelyn Rubenstein sculpture blog or the Panther Project.

These two things should help in a presentation that I am trying to create

My husband, who also works in 3d, said to post on the daz forum.  He raved about how helpful they were.  Wow, was he right. Within 20 minutes someone replied and gave me these two suggestions. I labored over which one to buy when my husband came in, peered over my shoulder and said, “Buy them both, they are real cheap.” So, thanks to the daz forum for all of their help. M4 air Crew Set by Daz 3d is $12.95 and Toolboi is $24.95

More on this presentation later.

Starting From The Ground Up! Process Writing For The Evelyn Rubenstein Sculpture

I really do like sculpting feet and shoes.

I guess I’m starting from the ground up.  Or putting my best foot forward.  I had the foam legs and feet with heels on and thought it might be good to start here. I found a pair of my own high heels as reference and have been sculpting for the last few days.  It is funny to have the feet almost done and the rest of the body has not been started.

There are other motives for sculpting the  the feet off of the main body of the sculpture.  I have worked on them for about 2 days and it is much easier having them on a table than to be scrunched down on the floor.

Now that they are done I have wrapped them in saran wrap to prevent any foam from getting on them when I put the entire piece together.  I have created a pipe armature that will enter Evelyn’s back.  This way the weight of the sculpture does not have to set entirely on the foam legs and ankles.  It would be great if there was a pipe going through her leg and heel, but I’m not sure that can work.  I can’t wait to put the foam pieces together and see her as a whole.  First, to hem that skirt a bit.

What Does Milled Foam Look Like As It Is Being Milled?

Milled foam for the armature of Evelyn

Synappsys Digital Services sent me photographs of the milling of Evelyn. I’m including them here so others can see.

Foam For An Armature For Bronze Sculpture

The foam does not have enough depth to it. I add this by carving. The foam carves quite easily.

I am so excited to have my foam pieces created by Synappsys Digital Services so that it will expedite my process of creating the sculpture of Evelyn Rubenstein for the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center.  There is still some work to do on the foam before I can cover it with clay. I can revise the piece and create deeper cuts into the sculpture.  This give the sculpture depth.  I love the sweater that Evelyn is wearing in this piece and I can hardly wait to put the texture into it in the end, but that is a long way off.
