Looking for 3D Artists and Fine Art
I am giving a lecture at 3DCAMP Houston about art and technology. I’m also one of the committee members for 3DCAMP Houston 2012, and I’m gathering information for a book. I’m presently looking for 3D artists using some sort of digital 3D to create artwork in a physical form. That means creating in 3D, output using 3D tools such as cnc, or rapid prototyping, or incorporating 3D in the physical work somehow. The things I have learned about the technology surrounding 3D is that creative people are forever surprising me. Artists are pushing the tools to create work that has never been created before.
How about the vendors?
I’m also interested in talking to vendors about the tools and services they have to offer that directly relate to the fine art audience. Though 3DCAMP is looking for vendors who work in all areas that use 3D.
If you have artwork and can share your process with me , as well as your vendors please contact me with some links to your work. This information will be used for:
- A lecture at 3DCAMP Houston and other areas
- A possible book
- Articles and possible podcast interviews.
We are also interested in finding artwork for an up and coming art show for 3DCAMP Houston. The prospectus will be on the 3DCAMP Houston website soon. If you are interested simply subscribe to the 3DCAMP website newsletter and we will be sure you receive the information as soon as it is posted.

3DCAMP- Houston-Get Ready
I have been working with a few very interesting people on reviving the 3DCAMP-Houston that took place in 2009. It is exciting to be on this committee and to see something grow and come to fruition.
3D CAMP is a day long seminar that will take place September 29th, 2012 in Houston, Texas.
Many different speakers will be present as well as vendors and others. Now we are not just talking gaming and 3D as it pertains to film. Now 3d is reaching wider than that, and personally, I’m very excited to see a fine art component added to this years 3D CAMP
What else is new about this 3D CAMP? Well this time it is going to be taking place in The Arts District of Houston. This is a series of warehouses just south of I-10 off of Sawyer. If you know of artist David Adickess it is where his old studio used to be, and yes, his large heads of presidents will be there for viewing. Transportation will be provided between speaker venues. One venue will have an exhibition hall where vendors and artists can work and show their process and wares. In this same exhibition hall will be a blow out art show featuring many different aspects of 3D art. The art show will be the night before the event. Think show, party, excitement!
I will be speaking and here is a description of my two topics.
3d Art – Fabric to Frankenstein
3d technology, science and art are combined to create some incredible and sometimes bazaar artwork. Sculptor, Bridgette Mongeon shares the work of different artists, and the vendors and universities who are making some interesting discoveries. Many artists are embracing the new technology, having fun and creating some incredible and sometimes gruesome artwork.
Bridging the gab between the traditional and digital sculpture studio
Sculptor Bridgette Mongeon shares her work flow and resources of incorporating both digital and traditional technology in what is referred to as tra-digi art that she creates in her Houston, Texas studio. The new technology expands the creative process and expedites her work flow.
A Great Committee!
There are some really prime people on the committee. I don’t have everyone’s bios but besides myself there is executive director of SpaceTaker– Jenni Rebecca stephenson. What is spacetaker? Here is what is on their mission statement “Spacetaker is a 501(c)3 professional organization and Artist Resource Center located in Houston’s First Ward whose mission is to provide artists and non-profits access to economic development, continuing education, and networking opportunities to support their professional growth.”
Lori Betz from Betz Art Gallery and Betz Art Foundry Betz Gallery is in charge of the art show and the call for artists.
David Morris is the founder of 3D CAMP- I can’t believe he did this on his own in 2009.
There are of course some others listed on the planning committee but I have not met them face to face yet.

A Free 3D Symposium For Artists In Houston, Texas
Big things are happening in Houston, Texas. After creating numerous tutorials and working on several books for artists who want to be inspired by using both traditional and digital processes in their studio, we are in the planning stages for a free 3d symposium in Houston, Texas. I’m having a meeting this week to see if we are going to join forces with 3D camp Houston. If you want to know more, to be on a mailing list or interested in participation as a speaker or sponsor, please post to this blog and I’ll be sure to let you know.
FYI, please pass the word, if we can have enough participation we are also interested in hosting a combined art show featuring 3d work.
Finished 3D Presentation For Possible New Project
I mentioned in a previous post that I was looking for just the right 3d outfit to use in a presentation that was similar to the ones I had in a photograph. Well, I must say that the people on the forum of daz 3d rock. They answered my questions within an hour and pointed me in the right direction.
To learn more about this project follow along on the project blog at United In Space.
Looking For A 3D Jump Suite-Sculpture Presentations
Working on a new project presentation and could really use a jump suite that looks similar to this or can be modified in a sculpting program to look like this. Not a real one, a 3d model that I can use with a daz or poser model
If you are interested in seeing how I use these 3d models, it is a bit different from most. I use them in presentations for life-size bronze sculpture, and sometimes in my process. Check out this You tube video or some of the other documentation of my projects on this blog by searching for daz or poser or check out one of my project blogs such as the Evelyn Rubenstein sculpture blog or the Panther Project.
My husband, who also works in 3d, said to post on the daz forum. He raved about how helpful they were. Wow, was he right. Within 20 minutes someone replied and gave me these two suggestions. I labored over which one to buy when my husband came in, peered over my shoulder and said, “Buy them both, they are real cheap.” So, thanks to the daz forum for all of their help. M4 air Crew Set by Daz 3d is $12.95 and Toolboi is $24.95
More on this presentation later.

What Does Milled Foam Look Like As It Is Being Milled?
Synappsys Digital Services sent me photographs of the milling of Evelyn. I’m including them here so others can see.

My Armature Is Delivered To My Door
I had been away and out of the studio for a week and while gone I was happy to see that Synappsys Digital Services, took the digital work that I had done and created and milled out my pieces. Here is a bit of technical information for any artists seeing this blog post. Synappsys has two CNC milling machines, a 21inch z axis, and a custom one that they designed and built— a 3 axis- with a 8′ rotary axis. besides milling Synappsys Digital Services, offers 3d rapid prototyping. They are in Norman Oklamoma which does not pose that much of a problem for me as a Texas artist as I can send them my files and foam pieces are light and will fit in a wardrobe box.
The process
Foam is put on the milling machine and the machine mills out the digital file that I have sent to them. The entire reason for this process is that it saves me time in creating an armature. I also can figure out some details of the process, and design which has been discussed in previous posts.

Preparing ZBrush File For Digital Milling
I have worked diligently with this model. For ZBrush users or traditional sculptors entering the digital field, here are some things that I had to do near the end.
Perspective
Be sure that I was viewing this entire project in the perspective view. We traditional sculptors are not used to having to push a button to see in perspective, but these digital programs do. This should be done in the beginning to be sure you are sculpting correctly. This is basic, but check before you output.
Will my cut foam pieces align?
I had to fix the arms, as mentioned in the previous post. I need to fit these arms on the body and they will be milled at a higher resolution. I also plan to use less clay on them. I had sculpted them way under the sweater, instead I cut them off at the sleeve. I did this using Transparency to see through the sleeve.
Preparing Files
I will be sending this as 4 separate files- the base, the body, and the two individual arms. I might also combine them and send them as one file so that Synappsys can see how they go together. Though I do want them milled separately.
Before I can get these pieces ready there is another step I must do. Right now the files are very large for each. ZBrush has something called Decimation Master. Decimation master lets you hold your detail, but brings the file of each of the pieces down considerably
For example:
Before Decimation Master After Decimation Master
34% OF DECIMATION)
Right Arm
Active points 326,954 127,188
Left Arm
Active points 296,078 140,452
Body
Active points 7,751 mil 3,329mil 1,149 mil
Base
Active points 87,202 37,468
I can export the entire project and individual subtools, ie. arms, body and base as individual obj’s and then combine them as one obj . However, ZBrush also has a plugin that allows me to collect for output in the preferred .stl file for digital printing. Which means that I will have a different type of file for the vendor. In the next post I’ll talk about my experimentation with this plug in.
Ready To Send Sculpture For Enlargement
I have been working hard, looking at reference and learning about my new subject—Evelyn Rubenstein. I am documenting this process on a blog created for the Evelyn Rubenstein Sculpture for the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center. I’m also posting some more detailed, technical information on my own Creative Endeavors blog. I have been using some of the new tools in Zbrush. Such things as Dynamesh which made my work much easier. The final sculpture will be milled in foam by Digital Sculpture Enlargement and Reduction and then sent to me. I will put clay on the foam and finish detail so that it can go through the bronze process. I thought I would give you a little 3 dimensional tour of this new piece before finalizing it for output.
