SIGGRAPH Conference- Looking For Interviews

SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques) is a very large computer graphics conferences.  I have attended many SIGGRAPH conferences both as an attendee and as press.  As a freelance writer and a podcaster I’m always looking for interesting new technology to discuss.  My added interests this year are also emphasized by being Vice Chairwoman of 3DCAMP Houston 2012.  I’m looking for things that might be of interest for our September 29th conference in Houston and artists for our international call for art for “The Third Dimension” Art show.

Loved writing about the art at the 2008 SIGGRAPH. Traditional veteran sculpture Erwin Hauer embraces technology-An article that I would like to turn into an up-and-coming podcast.

In the past SIGGRAPH has introduced me to some of the most interesting people and technology, and indeed it was the driving force for reference material as I completed an MFA-IA that focused on Art and Technology.

My thoughts on SIGGRAPH and Technology
I thought this might be a good opportunity to posts articles that relate to some of the topics at SIGGRAPH and art and technology that I have written in the past. I’ll also list my focus for my up and coming SIGGRAPH trip. If you know of a booth or an artist I should visit, please let me know.  At this moment, I am not coming as press, but an attendee, unless someone needs an article or two from the conference, I’d be happy to oblige.  My exploration at SIGGRAPH will still be as press, for my freelance articles and podcasts, as well as for a book I have been working on about Art and Technology. I’m just not working in an “official” SIGGRAPH Press capacity, unless someone contacts me to do so between now and SIGGRAPH.

An Art Show Featuring 3D And Technology

I’m thrilled that Gil Bruvel will be joining the artshow. I have been a fan of his work and featured it in my Mudbox book in the chapter on digital printing, and scanning. I’m not sure what pieces he is putting into the show but this one is called “The Builder” and is printed in metal.

I received this press release from the media at 3DCAMP Houston 2012. As vice chair, I’m pretty absorbed in the planning of 3DCAMP and am excited to have the opportunity to see some really incredible work. I’m posting this here so that I can encourage others to show what great things they are doing. Please feel free to pass on this post and press release. This art exhibit is open to anyone and is a national call. It is not just what one would refer to as 3D art, but 3D printed art as well, and I hope some people send things like 3D art that has to do with our theme of STEAM—Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Math. How about some 3D printed buildings? Can’t wait to see what others do. Hey, if you own a rapid prototyping company please pass this on to those who are using your equipment, they should be sure to mention your equipment in the definition of the art. Remember this is not just 3Dprinted work,it is anything 3D – well you know 3D technology stuff- we traditional artists have been calling work 3D long before technology called it 3D.    More information can be found on the 3DCAMP 2012 website. Oh and it is not limited to physical objects, there is an area for film and can’t wait to see what images some people are creating with 3D software.

If you live near Texas and want to attend 3DCAMP Houston registration will be opening up soon.The date of the art show is 28th of September. It will be open to the public and then open for 3DCamp Houston symposium the following day Saturday September 29th, 2012. It is hosted by the University of Houston Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in conjunction with the Department of Arts. We also have room for more sponsors if you know of anyone who is interested.

3DCAMP and Houston Art and Culture announce a national call to artists

“The Third Dimension” is in conjunction with 3DCAMP Houston’s symposium, an all-day conference featuring presentations and live demos from expert speakers. The symposium is scheduled for the following day, Saturday, September 29. The exhibition will remain open to the public during the symposium.

3DCMAP Houston is a participant-driven gathering of 3D professionals and students from a wide range of disciplines including fine art, education, science, engineering, medical, computing and many more. 3DCAMP’s commitment to educate the public about the latest 3D technologies will include presentations showcasing technology that can aid artists in the creative process to achieve new and exciting results in their work.

Houston Art and Culture, a nonprofit organization with the mission to enrich the local art community through mentoring and scholarships, recently partnered with 3DCAMP Houston in order to expand both organizations’ initiative for educational outreach. President and founder of Houston Art and Culture and 3DCMAP co-chair Lori Betz will be a juror.

“This exhibit will feature artwork that uses some of the techniques and technologies that the speakers will be talking about, and the art work is amazing. It’s like nothing you have ever seen before,” Betz said.

Deadline for submission is scheduled for September 3.

A Contest In 3D Printing? Your Work Printed-Thoughts

I have been working diligently on 3DCAMP Houston planning committee. We are still working out all of our sponsors and exhibitors and we have a couple of exhibitors/sponsors specializing in rapid prototyping.  I thought it might be a good idea to work out a contest, this would not be just for those attending 3DCAMP Houston, but for anyone.  I’m posting this to see how others feel about the contest and to find some suggestions in putting this contest together, and if this is a viable endeavor?

The contest would be open to everyone, and not just those attending 3DCAMP Houston. That way, we promote what we are doing at  3DCAMP Houston and our sponsors, while talking about the contest.  It is a win, win situation.

The thought is that individuals would send images of their 3d work ( I figure requesting jpg images from 2-3 sides would be sufficient. We would have to designate the file size.Then if they are chosen they can send us the designated file.)

Then our committee will pick from the designs and then the 3DCAMP Houston visiting sponsors could print out the design.  The winners can be displayed in our art show scheduled the day before the conference and stay up through the conference. A copy would be sent to those who have won.  ( That same print that is displayed could be sent to the individual, but I’m not sure if we would need it, perhaps we would like to display it again next year?)

I’m just wondering how others would structure such an endeavor, and some of the guidelines. I’m sure that the equipment of some of our sponsors will dictate which piece is printed by which sponsor? For example a piece in color or pieces that move.  We are still finalizing our sponsorships and so I can not say what type of machines or who the sponsors are at this moment, as we will be finalizing this in the next few weeks.  Just writing to get some general information and thoughts about the idea.

About 3DCAMP Houston 2012

3DCAMP Houston is working with a not for profit organization to educate individuals in everything 3D.  The event is for 2- 3 days. beginning with an art show on Friday the 28th of September, an all day symposium with speakers on the 29th of September, and possibly workshops in different software on Sunday for those who register. There is also an exhibitors space.  Our event this year is being hosted by The University Of Houston College of Sciences and Mathematics along with the School of Art. We are incorporating STEAM an educational initiative that support Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.  For more information please see our press release on the 3DCAMP website. Therefore, perhaps we have categories of participation in the contest that represent different fields?  I’m open for suggestions.  Any thoughts out there?

I am presently working on another book that extends chapter 7 of the Mudbox book and focuses on the work of artists and their process of using 3D, for artwork realized in a physical form, as well as the process and pitfalls of these tools.  It will also be a source book of resources and vendors for those interested in extending their tools set to include this type of work.

3DCAMP Houston Returns In 2012 With The Collaboration Of The University of Houston to Build STEAM

Press Release (Houston, TX—June 24, 2012) 3DCAMP Houston, a local organization supporting education in all things 3D, is proud to announce its return scheduled for Saturday, September 29. The University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the School of Art will host 3DCAMP Houston 2012, featuring a number of expert speakers who will discuss 3D technologies and how they are impacting new and existing disciplines. This year the camp will also feature an art exhibition to showcase the impact of technology on art.

3D technology, once reserved for the likes of sophisticated science fiction films, has advanced to now include a myriad of artistic and scientific disciplines. This year’s camp will showcase these advancements with presentations exploring innovative technologies. From holographic paintings that tantalize the viewer to 3D printers that produce completely formed sculptures, there is something amazing for everyone to experience.

The goal of 3DCAMP Houston 2012 is to encourage and educate individuals about the use of 3D in various disciplines; therefore 3DCAMP 2012 is returning with STEAM, an educational initiative that supports 3DCAMP Houston educational goal of incorporating and encouraging the blending and education of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM).

“The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston is pleased to help further the community’s appreciation and knowledge of the many aspects of 3D applications in our modern world. The rapid evolution in visualization technology is playing a critical role in advancing many important areas, from medical and surgical techniques to new methods of energy realization and information transmission,” said Mark A. Smith, dean of the college. “With the university playing a critical role nationwide in these developments, it is satisfying as well as natural to help bring this understanding to our community through 3DCAMP 2012.”

Must See-3D Printing of Ceramic And DIY

As you may know, if you are a regular reader of my blog, I am both a traditional and a digital sculptor.  I entered into digital technologies a few years back and studied bridging the gap between the traditional and digital studio as my MFA.  I wrote  “Digital Sculpting With Mudbox: Essential Tools and techniques for artists”  with Miguel de la Flor a few years back. We did this,  not just to feature Mudbox, but there is a chapter that focuses on scanning, printing and milling. I believe this is one of the first printed books for artists that tell you exactly how to do these things.  I am working on another book that will feature these processes, a how to. It will also contain artists and their work and process along with being a reference book of vendors.

I have been interested in 3D Printing and have especially been interested in 3D Printing in ceramics.  There are many posts on this blog about Solehim at the University of Washington and what they are  doing with 3D Printing of ceramics. However, they are using  the SLS process and very expensive equipment. This is something that I could not replicate in my own studio.

With the support and excitement about DIY 3D printers I have really been interested in the works of Adrian Bowyer and Rep Rap.  In fact I am determined to make my own RepRap or MakerBot within the next year or two.  I have been holding off because there seemed to be a connection between Solheim and my own DIY 3D printer that was missing.  I need my DIY 3D printer to print ceramic.  That means not using a filament that is often used in FDM but instead an extruder.

Enter Unfold~fab A Belgian Design Studio that is doing just that. Yes, can you believe it? And don’t you love it when someone learns something and shares their experience? That is what they are doing on their blog. They are documenting their experiments with using an extruder, the mix, etc for everyone to try. Go Unfold~fab ! This is a blog that everyone interested in 3D printing in ceramic should be watching.  I have many questions for Unfold~fab and have requested a podcast interview to add to my Art and Technology podcasts.  Maybe I should hook up with the guys at TXRX, a Houston project-based team of makers that like to bring creative people together. I mentioned my interest in printing ceramic on a recent trip to the TXRX. Rex Baker, at the lab was definitely interested. Together maybe we could replicate what Unfold~fab is doing. I need help. I’m geek, but not quite geek enough to figure all of this out.

MakerBot Collaboration with Met Museum Puts Historic Artwork In Your Hands

Brooklyn, NY – June 11 2012 – In an historic move, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and creation technology pioneer MakerBot have joined forces to make statues, sculptures, and other three dimensional artworks from the museum’s collection available for anyone in the world to access virtually on Thingiverse.com and physically recreate with The Replicator™ – MakerBot’s third-generation 3D Printer for the home.

A select group of artists, hackers, and educators from the vast MakerBot Community traveled thousands of miles to attend the inaugural two-day ‘hackathon’ on June 1st, 2012.  The group toured the galleries of New York’s landmark museum to “3D Capture” works of art using basic cameras and the latest 3D software, creating the foundation for a wholly new kind of public archive.

From Helsinki to Tokyo to Fort Worth, ‘citizens’ of Thingiverse are getting their hands on historic works of art by downloading them from Thingiverse, a MakerBot community website where anyone can share and discover things that can be materialized – as if by magic – using a household 3D Printer like The Replicator™.

In the spirit of the Museum’s commitment to share its collection with the public, those who have not yet visited the galleries will now be able to examine artwork digitally or ‘in person’ by reproducing the artwork on a MakerBot. Teachers can bring history straight into the classroom. Artists can modify, remix and re-imagine classics once set in stone.

The Met MakerBot Hackathon is only the first chapter in MakerBot’s effort to bring art back to life. The company has issued a challenge to its community: Capture Your Town! In the coming months, regular people all around the world will use the same simple process and freely available tools to ‘capture’ artwork, buildings, people, and things in 3D and share them in the Thingiverse.

Looking for 3D Artists and Fine Art

I am giving a lecture at 3DCAMP Houston about art and technology.  I’m also one of the committee members for 3DCAMP Houston 2012, and I’m gathering information for a book. I’m presently looking for 3D artists using some sort of digital 3D to create artwork in a physical form. That means creating in 3D, output using 3D tools such as cnc, or rapid prototyping, or incorporating 3D in the physical work somehow.  The things I have learned about the technology surrounding 3D is that creative  people are forever surprising me.  Artists are pushing the tools to create work that has never been created before.

How about the vendors?
I’m also interested in talking to vendors about the tools and services they have to offer that directly relate to the fine art audience. Though 3DCAMP is looking for vendors who work in all areas that use 3D.

If you have artwork and can share your process with me , as well as your vendors please contact me with some links to your work. This information will be used for:

  • A lecture at 3DCAMP Houston and other areas
  • A possible book
  • Articles and possible podcast interviews.

About 3DCAMP Houston 2012
3DCAMP is an all day conference of professionals and students and those who have an interest in 3D. We all come together to learn and share about everything 3D. 3DCAMP 2012 is coming back with STEAM, supporting the educational initiative of incorporating and encouraging the blending and education of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) . We are very excited to have both the University Of Houston Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics as well as the School of Arts as our hosts for 3DCAMP 2012.  September 28th is the art show that is open to the public. 3DCAMP- Houston-Get Ready

I did not speak at the 2009 3d camp, instead I presented in the common area. Here I am talking about the Next Engine Digital Scanner

I have been working with a few very interesting people on reviving the 3DCAMP-Houston that took place in 2009. It is exciting to be on this committee and to see something grow and come to fruition.

3D CAMP is a day long seminar that will take place September 29th, 2012 in Houston, Texas.

Many different speakers will be present as well as vendors and others. Now we are not just talking gaming and 3D as it pertains to film. Now 3d is reaching wider than that, and personally, I’m very excited to see a fine art component added to this years 3D CAMP

What else is new about this 3D CAMP? Well this time it is going to be taking place in The Arts District of Houston. This is a series of warehouses just south of I-10 off of Sawyer. If you know of artist David Adickess it is where his old studio used to be, and yes, his large heads of presidents will be there for viewing. Transportation will be provided between speaker venues. One venue will have an exhibition hall where vendors and artists can work and show their process and wares. In this same exhibition hall will be a blow out art show featuring many different aspects of 3D art. The art show will be the night before the event.  Think show, party, excitement! 

I will be speaking and here is a description of my two topics.

3d Art – Fabric to Frankenstein

3d technology, science and art are combined to create some incredible and sometimes bazaar artwork. Sculptor, Bridgette Mongeon shares the work of different artists, and the vendors and universities who are making some interesting discoveries. Many artists are embracing the new technology, having fun and creating some incredible and sometimes gruesome artwork.

Bridging the gab between the traditional and digital sculpture studio

Sculptor Bridgette Mongeon shares her work flow and resources of incorporating both digital and traditional technology in what is referred to as tra-digi art that she creates in her Houston, Texas studio. The new technology expands the creative process and expedites her work flow.

A Great Committee!

There are some really prime people on the committee. I don’t have everyone’s bios but besides myself there is executive director of SpaceTaker– Jenni Rebecca stephenson. What is spacetaker? Here is what is on their mission statement “Spacetaker is a 501(c)3 professional organization and Artist Resource Center located in Houston’s First Ward whose mission is to provide artists and non-profits access to economic development, continuing education, and networking opportunities to support their professional growth.”

Lori Betz from Betz Art Gallery and Betz Art Foundry Betz Gallery is in charge of the art show and the call for artists.

David Morris is the founder of 3D CAMP- I can’t believe he did this on his own in 2009.

There are of course some others listed on the planning committee but I have not met them face to face yet.

Finished 3D Presentation For Possible New Project

I mentioned in a previous post that I was looking for just the right 3d outfit to use in a presentation that was similar to the ones I had in a photograph. Well, I must say that the people on the forum of daz 3d rock. They answered my questions within an hour and pointed me in the right direction.
